Acme – Pleasant Valley, New York

Location: 13 North Avenue, Pleasant Valley,  NY

Today we have some pictures of the Pleasant Valley Acme in New York, sent in by an annonymous contributor along with other New York locations which will be coming to the blog soon. Crowds look light at  this time of day but according to the aerial views, this is a high volume store. The logo on front is a little odd. It looks to be solid red with no white outlines. Certainly a very unique exterior for an A&P and an Acme!

Round 1 of the "fresh" remodel inside.

This store did get an Acme sign from the front-end. Stores that didn't get one of these signs during the conversions STILL don't have one. At least the ones I've been in. Seems like Acme just gave up getting more of these made.

AERIAL VIEWS

Now that's a hopin' parking lot!

Looks like a former Grand Union across the street. Judging from the awning and the windows along the front, it was remodeled in the 80's. Interestingly, the other stores in the shopping center appear to have the same facade as Grand Union would have had prior to the 80's remodel. Click here for a look at a former Grand Union that still has its original facade.

The oldest view available for this are is from 1995. Not much has changed since then.

Former Morrisville Acme...

DEMOLTION!

Photos courtesy of Ian Anderson

Location: 545 West Trenton Avenue, Morrisville, PA
Opened in 1995
Closed November 2012

We knew this day was coming. The former 90's Morrisville Acme is finally coming down to make way for redevelopment of the site. Wawa had been planning to build a store here but has since pulled out. Three buildings, including a Rite Aid, will be constructed in place of the Acme. You can view the plans for the site by clicking here.

The Morrisville Acme had a one-of-a-kind facade design.

The interior has been cleared out already so there isn't any signs of Acme to be seen inside...

Nothin' but a huge mess in there!

UPDATE TO MORRISVILLE'S
FORMER ACME

Location: 1 E Trenton Ave, Morrisville, PA
Opened in August 1967
Closed in 1995

Ian also sent in updated photos for the former pitched-roof store which was replaced by the 90's model.

The old Acme sign is still up inside! No longer illuminated, unfortunately. Looks like the updated to the facade is keeping exterior light from lighting up the colorful tiles. Below is a shot of how the  sign looked previously...

Thanks to Ian for the great photos!

The new oval logo has been updated!

BEFORE...

The photo above was taken at the 10th and Reed store in Philadelphia shortly after its remodel in 2014. It's safe to say this logo blew a lot of our minds with how awesome it was! An extremely successful update to Acme's dreadfully dull block-letter logo, accomplished with a nod to Acme's logos of the past. The original version has been used in remodels over the past few years and appears in Acme's newest location in Barnegat, New Jersey.

AFTER...

This photo, courtesy of Supermarket Fan, shows the updated logo in the newly remodeled Kenilworth store. This new design first began to appear on the register lights which were being installed in former A&P and Pathmark stores. I noticed the logo was looking a little different but hadn't taken the time to verify it until this past weekend. When I saw Supermarket Fan's photos of the Kenilworth store, I new for sure the logo had been changed.

AFTER...

Updated register lights at the Edgewater location.

I'm a little sad to see the first version getting retired already. In my mind, that new logo marked a major turning point in Acme's history. The slow, painful slide to obscurity finally over with new owners taking aggressive measures to improver stores and to secure a prosperous future for Acme. That said, the updated version is slightly bolder and a bit more sophisticated, while still giving a nod to the past with a less retro feel. Which one do you prefer?

This. Is. Awesome.

Acme has really stepped up their flower displays with orchids and roses.

The Quality Built décor is looking fantastic here!

No more crappy peal and stick letters on the walls! Hard to notice here but you can see the letters are 3D forms mounted to the walls above the other departments.

A little odd that this area wasn't branded the "Foods To Go" department.

Corner Deli looking much better with a big "ACME"! Still wish they would put the updated oval logo here.

Possibly new meat cases here. Not sure what's going on with the wall behind them. It is tile? Is it painted?

I think this is an Acme first! Aisle markers facing parallel to the aisles, the same way A&P hung their aisle signs.

Yeah it is!

I do wish Acme would brand their Bakeries. "Fresh Baked" is so painfully generic.

Supermarket Fan: Is there a retro logo wall in this store?

Over the years, I've often complained about Acme's lack of custom designed register lights and its dreadfully boring block-letter logo. Well no more! I still can't believe how far Acme has come since this blog launched in 2009.

Thanks Supermarket Fan for the great pictures!

BROOMALL ACME!

Grand Reopening: May 5, 2016

I photographed this store years ago for the blog. The interior pictures turned out horribly so I never posted them. As you can see below, they ditched the Sav-on sign AND centered the ACME sign! The interior previously had the Abertsons Marketplace remodel and has been remodeled with the Quality Built décor. Check out this article on Delaware County Times for additional photos and information.

Status of Sea Isle City Acme...

Photo courtesy of Sea Isle City Guide

Location: 6212 Landis Ave, Sea Isle City, NJ

Acme is in a race against time to get the new Sea Isle City store open by Memorial Day Weekend. The Sea Isle City Guide reports that construction has been going on around the clock to make the deadline. Rapid progress is also underway to the interior. The registers were installed about two weeks ago. We can see in the photo above that the exterior is looking great! Way more personality here than the bland facade at the new Beach Haven store. Acme Style will bringing you a full tour of the new store once it opens. For additional details on the construction progress and photos of the new store, check out the Sea Isle City Guide by clicking here
